What you were programmed to believe you could do

Published by Coach Mari Sullivan February 8, 2023

You are capable of so much more than what you were programmed to believe you could do.

That’s right! Sometimes what we believe ourselves to be capable of doing has more to do with our inner programming rather than our true limitations. It may sound strange at first, but our mindsets can literally be the thing holding us back from where we want to go in life even more so than any physical, genetic, or otherwise barrier.

It’s not surprising to find people who have had more of a challenging upbringing or have found themselves in addictions, with mental struggles, or patterns of behavior that do not serve them, in a state of believing they are limited in what they can and cannot do. They are more likely to talk themselves out of advancing opportunities, better environments, or picking up a new skill.

When we have limiting beliefs, it’s usually because we were told what we could and couldn’t do. Sometimes maliciously, but more times by people who loved us, but didn’t know how to encourage our own true selves and our own limitations. They may be under their own limiting beliefs as well and are passing on what they think is good information to keep you safe.

But your limitations are just that… YOUR limitations. You have the opportunity to create the life you want to live with intention and purpose. What you tell yourself is the biggest trajectory to creating the life you want to create, or staying the same and feeling so uncomfortable with your reality.

It is never too late to start taking steps toward that limitless version of you. It starts with baby steps in the direction you want to go and that creates compound change in the trajectory of your life.

There are a couple of tricks to something that may sound so easy to be true.

  • First, many tend to take bigger steps, get overwhelmed, and quit, telling themselves they aren’t capable of the accomplishment. The mindset change allows us to review the timeframe or the bitesize of the goal, so it can be more attainable, and create the momentum that is needed to create the change. Can this be broken down into bite-size pieces? Was the timeframe unrealistic? Is there a human choice to get back up after getting knocked down? Do you have the right help and resources?
  • Secondly, here’s a big concept… it’s supposed to be overwhelming. Change is stressful, even positive change. The courage to step out of old habits, especially if they have been used for survival, is an act of carving out who a person was and redefining themselves into who they want to be. That takes time, courage, patience, belief, and the ability to manage the overwhelm and stress that comes along with it.

If this is too much to do alone, let’s start a conversation as to how I can help you see how capable you are.

As a Life + Recovery Coach, walking people through this path is not only what I do, it is what I am passionate about, because I have been there too. I get it. But I have carved myself out and am on a mission to help others see they can do it for themselves too.

Be limitless. Be bold. Be courageous. Be YOU.
